Welcome to The Read, Do, & Tell Podcast! This is our official re-launch of the podcast under a new name and new website here at Raising Rooted Disciples.

This episode is more relaxed and informal as Amy and I {Becky} reintroduce ourselves on camera! Yep, we're no longer "hiding" behind the computer screen.

In today's episode, Amy and I are each sharing three facts about ourself. For example, did you know that Amy loves to dance Salsa? Did you know that Becky prefers non-fiction?

Then, we're each sharing a surprise fact about the other person {that neither of us knew would be shared}.

We're also sharing why we changed the location and name of the podcast.

A few years ago, I {Becky} was listening to a sermon in which Ezra 7 was the text.

Ezra 7:10 says, “Now Ezra had determined in his heart to study the law of the Lord, to obey it, and to teach its statutes and ordinances in Israel.”

There's a flow to this verse. First, you know God’s Word for yourself. You study it. {READ} Then, you obey it after you know it. {DO} And then, once you’re studying it and you're obeying it, it’s now your responsibility to teach and disciple others. {TELL}

Hence the name Read, Do, and Tell.

Welcome to the Read, Do, and Tell Podcast. I am Becky. I'm Amy. Now we have renamed the podcast, and we are recording our lovely faces for you to see in a new studio that my husband and my son helped me build, and we're excited to be here. For about five years now, I have really felt the need to create more Bible printables and resources on my site, This Reading Mama. But really, that wasn't when I started This Reading Mama. That wasn't the vision for that website. And so recently I've had a clear direction on where I need to go with all those things. So I really feel the need that there needs to be more resources for parents in the hands of parents or Sunday school teachers in the area of Bible literacy, in the area of Christian apologetics for sure, and in the area of theology. And so I attended CIA, which is cross-examined instructors academy. I was able to attend online, which was pretty awesome. Within that whole, I don't know, six or eight weeks. I forget how long it was. There were times when you got to meet face to face. Well, not really face to face. You got to meet online with different instructors from cross-examined academy. And one of those was Elisa Childers, one of those was Natasha Crane. Um, there was Bobby Conway, there was Frank Turek. And those were great times where you could pick their brain. They would literally say, ask me any question. It didn't have to be apologetics related. And so I thought, well, here's my shot. I might as well ask what I should do with my podcast, what I should do with my website. How do I share? How do I get more resources that are family discipleship and apologetics and those type of things in people's hands? And so they gave me some very clear feedback. It was feedback I really didn't want to hear because it meant more work for me. But one of those was moving this podcast off the platform of being This Reading Mama's podcast to a different podcast that we're calling Read, Do, and Tell. And if you've watched this podcast or listened to it for any amount of time, you probably know why we named it that. And we'll get to that toward the end as well. But when I decided to branch off from This Reading Mama and create a new website, the name Raising Rooted Disciples really came to mind. When my kids were dedicated as babies, the church we attended at the time wanted us to have a Bible verse. The one that really, it was in the New Living Translation, is the version I really liked. But it was Colossians 2, 7. And my husband and I chose that verse for all four of our kids when they were dedicated to the Lord. So when I created raising rooted disciples, that those verses just really, I'll I'll read them. It was Colossians 2, and really it's verses 6 through 8. So here's what it says. Now this is the Christian Standard Bible, so it reads a little differently, but I still love it. It says, So then, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to walk in him, being rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, and overflowing with gratitude. Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elements of the world, rather than Christ. And so I love how that verse speaks to this child or this person has been taught, it's a church he's writing to, but that they have been taught the truth, and they're to be rooted in that truth and grow up in that truth, be discipled in that truth. And so with this podcast, we both know you can't disciple somebody unless you know it yourself. It's very hard to teach the word of God unless you know it and you're in it yourself. You're not going to know it perfectly. There are times when I'm reading the word and I'm I'm going, I've never, I've read this a billion times, but it never ever noticed this or learned this about it. So we're always learning, we're always growing, we're always being discipled through his word and through people who've walked ahead of us. But as we're discipled, we want to pass that on to other people in our lives. So today's episode is going to be a little different. We thought we would introduce ourselves, kind of reintroduce ourselves. If you go back to episode one, the very first episode we ever did, you'll just see our lovely faces in a picture. On a picture. Actually, you're going like this, or something like that. Um, so you'll you'll get information there, but we what both wanted to share a little more about ourselves on this podcast, our 30th episode.

You want me to go first? Yes, you can go first. An interesting fact about me is that I love to learn anything related to functional and holistic medicine. And this began when my husband and I took in his cousin who had stage four cancer. And it was a deep dive and discovering how God made our bodies and the fact that there are many different ways that we can help it heal on its own because he made us in such a wonderful way.

Absolutely. Absolutely. Okay, my first um fun fact, although it's not very fun, is that I'm a homebody. I really enjoy being home. So being out and about, unlike Amy, Amy could be out and about all day. Out and about stresses me out. Like we we take my son to a holistic type of doctor in about an hour and a half from our home. And this is a big city, and my poor kids get to hear me like, I don't like people this much. Why are there so many people everywhere? So many people will say they think I'm an extrovert, but really um I've come to believe I'm an extrovert trapped in an introvert's body because I would just like to be home all the time.

So you have to like look at someone and go, Oh, I know I need to go talk to them, so let's go do it.

Yes.

I'm the opposite. Yeah. I love to go talk to people, but sometimes I don't know what to say. And so it becomes a little awkward. So I'll be like, Hey, how are you doing? It's good to see you, and then that's about it. Um, but yeah, that's really funny. So another interesting fact about me would be that I love to dance. When I was in college, I lived in the international dorm and met a lot of people from other countries. And one of the first weekends I was there, it was still almost completely empty. And they invited me to a place called Roomba Latina, and that was the night that I got to see their dance group perform salsa, and I was like, I am gonna learn to do that. And I did. Every time it was open, that's where I was. I met my best friend at a salsa social, and we ended up moving in together during college, and so that is a big passion and joy of mine.

Very fun. And I'm kind of the opposite. We're an opposite in a lot of these things, so I can clap, I can stomp my feet to any rhythm you give me. I mean, I was a music major, but you asked me to dance. Mm-mm. I don't got it in me. This this girl can't dance. Okay, number two for me would be I'm a non-fiction reader. I love to learn. My daughter, when I was asking her what I should say, she was like, Tell them that you could be in school for the rest of your life. So if I had unlimited funds, I would go to school the rest of my life. I love learning. Um, I don't love reading fiction, even to, you know, people use it as an escape sometimes to read fiction. I don't know. I just don't. So the only exceptions I would say were a few series I read to my kids. Green Ember series. I really got into that. I kind of found myself reading ahead before I had to read out loud. Uh, Wing Feather Saga, before we were on air. Amy, you mentioned Narnia series. I enjoyed most of those books. We're alike in this, in this this area. This area. Okay, maybe that's why we're friends. So, and then Pilgrim's Progress. And then there was another one, Wilder King series. But to pick up a book by is it Karen Asbury? Karen somebody. Karen somebody wrote a book, lots of books, and a lot of my friends, my mom, a lot of people in my life will say, You have to read this book. And they're I'm like, I just won't do it. Yeah, I can't. Sorry.

All right. Um, the last interesting fact I'll share about me is um where I was asked to marry my husband at. So um I actually knew my husband was gonna ask me to marry him before because my sister told me she was requested to pick out my ring, and she reached out to me and said, Amy, you have to do this because I want you to like your ring. So I knew he was gonna do it then, and then um someone else kind of let it slip out where we were going and where he was gonna ask me. And so um we went to see a friend of his get married in Paris, and we were going to the Eiffel Tower on one of the nights that we were just kind of touring around, and he took a picture of my hands because the my fingers were a little blue because it was a little chilly, and he said, Oh, let's take a picture of your hands, they're not looking quite right. And then I'm going, Okay. And we go up the Eiffel Tower, we walk around, and we kind of stopped at a few places, and I went, This is the moment, this is the moment. Nope, we we're coming down the elevator of the Eiffel Tower, and he looks at me and he's like, What's wrong? Nothing, nothing's wrong. And we go out to dinner, and I was like, Nope, not here either. We get to the home that was hosting us, and I start to see people run around and then realize that later I realized they had champagne and everything out to celebrate with us, but it never happened. And so on our last day there, he took me to the Palace of Versailles. And we were walking around, it's a beautiful garden all the way around the palace, and I was like, oh, at any time, maybe, and then nothing. But because my husband was so afraid to be recorded and put online, they had fountains all throughout the garden. And we ended up at the fountain that was like the furthest back. Most people never made it back there, and it was broken. And we're looking out into this empty, broken fountain, and he turns and looks at me with this face, and he gets really serious, and then he asks me to marry him, and I just started bawling. Was like, he actually said, so, and I went, Yes, you became the fountain. Yeah, literally.

Yeah, that's a cool story. Okay, I don't have a really cool story like that because I've never been to Paris because I'm a homebody. But um, one thing I would say about myself is that I'm a dreamer. I have all these lofty goals and set all these big dreams. I have a very sad, empty garden in my backyard. It does have some things, but I I think I'm gonna do all these things and then I don't follow through. So um I'm really bad at I'm really, really bad at following through on my dreams. Like we were true. It is very true. So we were gonna memorize Romans 8. I was like, I had all these goals for the summer. I'm gonna do this, this, this, and that. And um, I haven't done very many of them.

Okay. I she does have a lot of great ideas, but she has so many that in a one person's lifetime or in the span of the summer, you can only get so many done. And to your credit, when you had the grand idea of this garden, it was blooming.

I mean, you had at first, yes, it was great.

Well, you had another idea you had to get to. So that was a success, and then you moved on to the next one. I love how you put that.

Okay. One of the things we wanted to do on this podcast episode was tell one thing about the other person, and the other person doesn't know what we're gonna say. So you want me to start? Okay, so I would say that Amy is, and I'm not gonna cry. I'm gonna be, I'm gonna do a really good job. Amy is a very authentic person. She has such a servant's heart. I was telling this to my daughter, and she was like, that is totally Amy. I said, she is quick, she's quick to weep with you if you're weeping. She will get down in the dirt and the ashes and wear sackcloth with you. And she's very quick if you something exciting happens in your life. She's jumping up and down with you very quickly and yelling and screaming. So, one example of that was we had not been doing house church, but for maybe a few months. And my husband had a medical emergency. I mean, he was in such extreme pain. I needed to take him to the ER. Well, I just remembered in conversations I had had with Amy that she stayed up late. Do you still stay up late? Not as late. But she would stay up till one or two in the morning most nights. And I thought, okay, it's 11 o'clock at night. All four of my kids are in bed. Who can I call? I'll call Amy. I don't know her from hardly anybody. Like I didn't really know you that well. This was when we just met. I'm so sorry to bother you. She's like, oh, I'm coming over right now. And she brought her lesson plans, her homeschool lesson plans. She was grading papers or something. And she brought this whole thing with her in the house. And she you stayed all night. Like you made your bed here in the house, and she stayed all night because I was constantly that was when you couldn't stay at the ER with anybody because it was during the whole, you know, all the fun times we had. But um, so so I was here. I actually came back to the house, but that kind of for me, that was solidified the relationship because I real she's just a true friend. If you're down and out and you need something, Amy's like, I'm coming right over. You're the first person to, and I'm usually like, oh, I'll pray for you at home, but I don't want to leave my house.

That's what I would say about you. Oh, that's sweet. Thank you, Becky. It's true. So um, I have a really I have two things actually for you. Sorry, I couldn't do just one. So an interesting or fun fact per se of Becky is she makes great bread and great brownies. Oh like when I say we're gonna go to Becky's and we're gonna have dinner, and they're like, is she making the brownies? Is she gonna have her bread? I don't know. So she's well known for that. And then the other thing about Becky is that she sees and she recognizes very quickly the gifts that other people have. And she doesn't just see them, but she looks for opportunities to help you engage with the gifts that you're given. Um, so that's something that you have that I think is awesome. Oh yeah, like even with your kids, like she sees it and she's like, Oh, I I can use you. You can use that gift. Wait, let me say it the other way. You can so in other words, people are a tool in my hand. No, no, no, no, no. Like with your kids, you see the gifts they have and you don't just go, oh, you're really good at this, but you find opportunities for them to help that gift grow.

Okay. So one of the things, one of the goals I had for years, because everybody was doing it, and because we get if everybody jumped off a bridge, would you jump off a bridge? Information, you know, I've been blogging for a lot of years, and people just don't typically anymore come to This Reading Mama or a blog or a website to get information. I mean, I'm old school, I still do, but there's a lot of people who don't. They prefer to get the information as they're writing from A to B or going running errands. And I'll do that too, listen to a podcast while I'm out walking or whatever. So I knew that I needed to start a podcast, and we were at Amy's house at this point, and I kept asking for just guidance from the Lord, like, where does he want me to go? Does he want me to start a podcast? I don't know how many, how many times I asked for that prayer, but it was a lot. A lot. And there was one night where Amy she grabs a piece of paper and a pen and she's like, okay, let's do this together. And she's like, What are we gonna call it? When are we gonna meet? What are we gonna talk about? What are we gonna do? And she's just jotting it all down. Uh-huh.

And Becky's like, well, I have a list of ideas. The Becky, the Becky responds, I have a list of ideas at home that we can talk about.

And I was like, okay, yes, because I had my I had dreamed it all up, but I just didn't follow through. So Amy is helpful in helping me follow through with goals. She's like that with everybody. It's been fun. One of the verses that really was inspirational was um Ezra 7.10. And I had listened to a Bible study or a sermon about this verse, uh, this passage really, but this verse really stuck out at me. It says, Um, again, this is Ezra 7.10. Now, Ezra had determined in his heart to study the law of the Lord, to obey it, and to teach teach teach. Teach it's statutes and ordinances in Israel. The pastor going through this talked about how the flow of it. First, you know it yourself, you study the law, you obey it after you know it. And then once you're studying it and you're obeying it, is now your responsibility to teach and disciple others. Hence the name Read, Do, and Tell.
